Welcome to the memorial page for

Donald Courtney McEvers

March 30, 1927 ~ February 18, 2017 (age 89) 89 Years Old

Donald C. McEvers, beloved husband, brother, son, dad, grandpa, great-granddad, uncle, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2017, at the age of 89 years old.

Donald McEvers was born on March 30, 1927 in Lignite, North Dakota.   Don was the 4th of 9 children born to Abner Earl McEvers and Mildred Ardelle Remington.  Don’s childhood on the farm was filled with hard work, music and laughter.

Don graduated from Lignite High School in January 1945.  He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on May 1, 1945, only a month into his 18th year, to support the WWII effort.  He was stationed at U.S. Naval Base Subic Bay, Philippines where he served as a Shore Patrolman.  After his honorable discharge in 1946 Don returned to North Dakota to help on the farm and drive truck; hauling grain, coal and heating oil to farmers.

In 1951, Don left Lignite and moved to Hayward, California to live with his sister.  He secured a job driving truck and that is where he met the love of his life, Ina Pearl Craven.  Don would always say it was “love at first sight.”  Don and Ina were married on January 17, 1953 at Montclair Methodist Church in Oakland. In 1957 they bought their first home in Hayward where they lived for 53 years and raised their family.  They were married 64 years at the time of Don’s passing.

Don worked for PG&E for 35 years, retiring in 1987.  He was well regarded and respected within the company for his dedication, intelligence, and innate decency, which allowed him to ascend the “company ladder” well beyond his high school education.  After retirement, Don filled his days with woodworking, service organizations, travel, church and family.

Don was a man of integrity and honor.  He was a teacher of all things, a mentor, a lover of music, a mechanic, and an inventor of anything necessary.  His family and friends will miss him dearly and are thankful for his legacy of faith and kindness. He was a long time, very active member of Wesley United Methodist Church.  Over the years Don was involved in Mason’s, PTA, Rainbow Girls, Cub Scouts and Boys Scouts; serving as both Cubmaster and Scoutmaster.  He was generous of his time and talents.

Don’s greatest joys in life were his family.  He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ina Pearl, and his children; Terri (Richard), Debbie (Kevin) and Bruce (Kathy); his grandchildren John (Tiffany), Jason (Noelle), Jill (Trevor), Kaylee (Eric), Amanda (Nick), Megan, Hannah, Collin, and 9 great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by his siblings; Gordon (Joy), Doug, Joyce, Allan (Shirley), Loren (Sharon) and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.  He was pre-deceased by his parents and sisters; Earlene, Helen, and Carol.

A Celebration of Life will be held at South Hayward United Methodist Church, 628 Schafer Road, Hayward, CA on March 6, 2017 at 1:00 PM.   In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to:  National Parkinson Foundation, 200 SE 1st Street, Miami, FL  33131
