He graduated from Overfelt High School in 1965, and served in the United States Air Force from 1965 to 1969 and was honorably discharged as a Senior Airman. Upon discharge from the service Rich began his professional career while at the same time attending and then graduating from San Jose State University. Rich relocated from San Jose to Morgan Hill in 1978, and from the late 1980s onward resided in the San Joaquin Valley. Rich spent his professional years in logistics and operations during the nascent era of Silicon Valley with early technology leaders that include Memorex, Itel, Intel, and Amdahl.
