Tribute

Harriet Louise Sawyer

1924-2021

Our beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother, Harriet Louise Sawyer, passed away on Easter Sunday, April 4, 2021 at the age of 96 and 11 months. Harriet was born in Oakland, Kansas, a suburb of Topeka, on April 25, 1924 to parents Ralph and Harriet Evelyn Pooler. Harriet had three siblings, Robert, Harold, and her younger brother Edward. All are departed now. She loved recalling her childhood days. One popular topic was how she and little brother Edward always teased each other and played tricks on each other. Her father was a railroad man but also raised goats. Mom loved the goats and was fond of all our dogs and cats.

She met and married John (Jack) Sawyer in 1945 while he was stationed in Topeka. After World War II, Jack and Harriet moved to California where Jack had family. Their daughter, Cindy was born in 1949 and Jeanette two years later in 1951. The Sawyer family moved following Jack's work to Tracy, Manteca and then Modesto. After raising their daughters, Harriet decided to get a job. She told no one. She just went out and got the job and announced it at dinner. She worked at the Campbell Soup Company as an executive assistant for 20 years. She loved her job. Then she and Jack decided to travel the world and enjoy their retirement. They took several cruises, saw much of the world, and enjoyed themselves and their friends immensely.

In June 2003, her beloved husband Jack died. She would go on to live another 18 years without him. Harriet was a charming woman. She loved having her hair done every week and always dressed beautifully for all occasions. Harriet and her good friend Warren Bull from her Campbell Soup days rekindled a friendship. He'd lost his wife and Harriet had lost Jack. They had eight years as companions going to special music events at the Gallo Center and other fun activities. Then Warren died this last November. Harriet loved all her friends and family. She was proud of her children and all the grandkids and loved talking about them. She loved family gatherings.

Harriet is survived by her daughters, Cindy Sawyer (her life partner Yvonne Clarke) and Jeanette Krick (her husband John), granddaughter Mika Anderson (her husband Rob) and their children Lauren and Caleb. Also, Harriet is survived by grandson Jared Krick (his wife Alison) and their children Andrew, Jace and Jude.

Due to the COVID situation, graveside services will be held for friends and family on April 23 at the Burwood Cemetery in Escalon, California at 1:00 pm.
