Tribute

John Sheridan Gaffney, 85, passed away Thursday evening, March 4, 2021 at his home surrounded by his family. John was born August 14, 1935 in Modesto, Ca to Sheridan and Anita (Tantillo) Gaffney. John lost his parents at the young age of 8 and was raised by his aunt Ann in Redwood City, Ca. He attended Sequoia High School where he was known as a great basketball player, a good friend and a “swell guy” with a great sense of humor. He drove a Mercury and was popular among his classmates.

John was hired by P.G. & E. at the age of 19 in Redwood City and worked his way to the position of Stockton Division Service Superintendent. He retired in 1993 after 37 years of service. In his earlier years, John moved to Ripon, Ca and in those days had a passion for hunting and fishing and he passed on and shared his knowledge to his son John at an early age. He was a life-long fan of the Oakland A’s and a season ticket holder. He was an excellent golfer and member of the Elkhorn Country Club for many years. And at one time they owned a beautiful second home on the golf course at Bodega Bay.

John was preceded in death by his loving wife of 42 years, Jaqueline J. Gaffney (October 24, 2020) whom he often affectionately referred to as “My Jackie.” He missed her terribly and visited her grave daily. Through the years they enjoyed many travels and often visited Aptos, Carmel, and his beloved Lake Tahoe. We have many fond memories of our yearly family vacations at the Aptos beach house, the Christmas celebrations with Jackie’s extravagant personalized stockings for each one of us and the great meals. John had a keen taste for good wine, good food and great conversation. He was an excellent cook himself and Jackie was his assistant. When Jackie became ill, John was her devoted main caregiver and was always tirelessly by her side.

He was a good family man and a good friend. He was kind, consistent and loyal, he will be greatly missed by all who loved him. John is survived by his son, John (Marie) Gaffney of Modesto; grandson, Michael (Victoria) Gaffney, great-grandson Connor of Modesto; granddaughter, Janelle Gaffney (Conrad); great-granddaughter’s, Kendall and Camille of Modesto. He is also survived by his stepson, Greg (Teri) Spoonhour of Lodi, stepdaughter, Debi Spoonhour of Escondido, four step-grandchildren and nine step great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to express a special ”Thank You” to Luz Geeslin for her devoted care of John.

A private burial will be held at Cherokee Memorial Park in Lodi. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to Bristol Hospice, 2800 W. March Ln. Ste. 110, Stockton, Ca 95219.
