Josephine Degerman

Josephine went to her heavenly home on April 25, 2024. She was born on July 28, 1929, to Savannah and John Thomas Burkhead, in Russellville Arkansas. Her life was one of perseverance under God’s unfailing love for her. Orphaned at eight years old she learned of God’s grace and his strength while being raised by her half-sister, Ona Nowlin. During the dust bowl she moved to California and settled in Stockton. In 1951, she was wed to Carl Degerman, a peach farmer in Escalon, California. Carl built their home, which they lived in until 2002. They had two daughters, Anita, and Carolyn. Raising their family and farming peaches and almonds, they continued trusting God for his provision. In 2002 they moved to Mill City, Oregon to be closer to Carolyn and Dave Halemeier. She was preceded in death by her husband Carl and is survived by daughters’ Anita Couchman (Tim), Carolyn Halemeier (Dave); her grandchildren Cyndie Anderson (Carl), Kristi McMahon (Devon), Elisa Miller (Aubrey), Joshua Halemeier (Kelsey), Heidi Halemeier and Janette (JJ) Halemeier soon to be Ellison (Brian); and her great grandchildren Jude, Wesley and Samuel Anderson (Cyndie), Taylor, Zoe, and Eleanor McMahon (Kristi); Juniper Miller (Elisa), Lucy Halemeier (Josh), Carter and Caden Halemeier (Heidi).

 Josephine will always be remembered for the respectful, caring, and joyful nature she possessed. Her love for Jesus, her family and all those she encountered were central to her life. Strength in adversity and compassion for others allowed her to pray for and befriend all she met. Her love of children touched many as she served in the church nursery for over thirty years. Grounded in faith, her prayers were felt by all. Farming, canning, fruit drying, sewing, gardening, fishing, and hunting were her favorite pastimes. Her beautiful, bright smile and her strength in the Lord for ninety-four years will be missed by all who knew her.

A memorial graveside service will be held May 10th at 11:00 am at Burwood Cemetery, 28320 E River Road, Escalon, California 95320. A time of sharing stories and visiting friends will be held following the graveside service at Trinity Church Fellowship Hall, 1900 California Street, Escalon, California. All are welcome.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Mill City, Oregon.
