Maria Simas
December 20, 1929 – January 10, 2021
Maria Simas peacefully passed away January 10, 2021 in Escalon, CA at the age of 91, surrounded by her loving family. Maria was born December 20, 1929 to Manuel and Maria Cardoso in Arrife, Lajes do Pico, Azores. In Maria’s early adulthood, she began her life in Cruz Santa Barbara, Lajes do Pico. In 1952, she married Jose Simas; they were married for 53 years until his passing. They moved to America to Half Moon Bay, California where they lived for 5 years. Maria worked in a nursery and a candle factory as well. When they moved to Escalon, Maria became a housewife while raising her children. She enjoyed cooking, baking sweetbread, knitting, crocheting and playing UNO. Maria had a great love for the Holy Spirit and enjoyed Festas with her family. If you visited Maria’s home, you would never leave hungry, as she would always offer a meal while you were there.
Maria is survived by her 5 children; Conceicao Simas Silveira of Cruz Santa Barbara, Lajes do Pico, Andrelina Simas Soares of Pontada Ilha Piedade, Lajes do Pico, Fatima Simas Rosa of Escalon, Jose A. Simas of Escalon and Eduino M. Simas of Escalon. Grandchildren; Eduardo Silveira of Ribeira do Meio, Lajes do Pico, Sandra Rosa of Escalon, Paulo Rosa of Hilmar, Jorgina Soares of Ponta de Ilha Piedade, Lajes do Pico, Aden Simas and Aleya Simas of Escalon, 3 great-grandchildren. Siblings; Natalia da Conceicao Cardoso of Cruz Santa Barbara, Lajes do Pico, Eva Simas Cardosa of Terras, Lajes do Pico and Margarida Simas Dutra of Arrife, Lajes do Pico. She is preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Jose Simas, parents; Manuel and Maria Cardoso, grandchildren; Jorge Monteiro and Ilysa Simas, siblings; Manuel Cardoso, Julia da Conceicao and Jose da Rosa Cardosa. Maria will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Deegan Funeral Chapels. A viewing will be held Monday, January 18, 2021 from 3:00 – 7:00 P.M. followed by recitation of the rosary at 7:00 P.M. at Deegan Funeral Chapel, 1441 San Joaquin St., Escalon, CA 95320. A private family mass of Christian burial will be Tuesday, January 19 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, followed by a committal service at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery.
