Virginia Darlene Jewett

September 13, 1925 ~ June 27, 2018 (age 92)

Virginia was born in Susanville, CA to Virgil Lewis Bower and Cecile Gertrude (Bowen) Bower. She had one brother, Donald Robert Bower. Virginia moved with her family to Richmond, CA in Sept 1933 at 8 years old. She graduated from Richmond High School in June 1943. She worked for the Kaiser Shipyards while in high school and then at Kaiser Hospital after graduation. In January 1944 she moved to Kansas City, Mo and entered the Cadet Nursing Program at Trinity Lutheran Hospital there.  She graduated as an RN in June 1947. She then worked for TWA at the overhaul base there until October 1948 when she and a friend moved to Seattle.  She worked at Children’s Hospital there and then moved back to Richmond in May 1949.  She then worked at Richmond Hospital.

Virginia met Truman Guynn Jewett in September of 1949 when they went to a Cal football game together. They married in April 1950 and moved to Chico, CA where Truman went to college. In 1951 their first child was born. In 1952 they moved to Petaluma, CA where their second child was born. In August of 1953 they moved to Newman, CA where Truman taught high school and Virginia enjoyed being a homemaker and mother. Their third child was born while they lived there.

In 1961 the family moved to Hayward, CA and owned Moo’s Ice Cream. They made another move to Fremont and then to Brentwood, CA. Truman died in 1996 and in 2000 she moved to Ripon.

Virginia traveled to England and Wales several times to visit relatives and her pen pal of over 60 years. She enjoyed going to Montana to visit her son and class reunions with her nursing friends.

Virginia was a member of the Ripon Senior Center where she participated in their various programs. She enjoyed reading, sewing and her garden.

She is survived by her children: Steven K. Jewett of Noxon, MT;  Kendall S. Jewett (Terry) of Cold Springs, CA and Kristine B. Nelson (Dennis) of Ripon, CA.  Granddaughter: Hannah M. Nelson of Sacramento, CA
